Manhattan Report, Bend Oregon 1/28/12
We sampled Manhattans at 5 Fusion, Tart, Zyedco and 900 Wall during a whirlwind ski trip. 5 Fusion Spice took top honors with their Evan Williams Single Barrel orange muddled version with a perfect blend of ingredients - and only $6 at Happy Hour! (great food too). Tart's "Three Wise Men" Manhattan was too heavy on the vermouth and their house made balsamic cherries were too dry and chewy. They were bit overspiced with a blend of three bitters (orange, cherry & traditional). Zydeco's Bulleit Rye offering was tasty but again had too much vermouth for out tastes. 900 Wall made a fine Beam Rye Manhattan and the blend was just right. We also served ourselves in-room Eagle Rare Bourbon Manhattans which were delectable. It's good to see increasing availability of the traditional Rye Whiskey ingredient!
